Our experience and knowledge of textiles spans more than two centuries…
…this means that our knowledge and expertise are second to none. The Whitakers brand can be traced back to 1789 and the historical Helmshore mills, located on the River Ogden in Lancashire. These mills are such a significant part of Lancastrian history that they have since been turned into a series of museums for today’s generation to see the cultural impact of textiles manufacturing in the county.
A Famous County
The mills were owned by the Turner family, who commissioned the build of a second mill, Whitaker Mill, in the 1820s. The Turner family were famous textiles manufacturers from Blackburn who used their knowledge to take cotton and wool to the global stage, for much of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, Lancashire was one of the largest exporters of cotton and wool in the world.
In 1857, a considerable amount of Whitaker Mill was destroyed in a fire, only to be rebuilt shortly after. The mill remained in operation as a working mill until 1978 by the then named L Whitaker & Sons. In 2005, we changed our name to Whitaker Services after being acquired by Vision Support Services; but you can call us Whitakers – the name our friends and customers know us by.
Today, you can find us located in Blackburn having gone full circle to return to the home of the original Turner family, and the original pioneers of the Whitaker brand.
